MATERIAL AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS tively) , for the caudal skeleton by Gosline ( 1961) , and for the recurrent facial nerve by Freihofer (1963) . The other approa ch is to study as many characters as possible in a particular percoid group, e. g., the Japanese serranids ( Katayama, 1959) and carangids (Suzuki, 1962) . The present investigation began as an effort to ascertain the systematic position and relationships of a few percoid genera. It soon became apparent that, except within the narrowest limits, this was impossible withut some overview of percoid classification as a whole. Th is paper is an effort to bring data on the supraoccipital crest and the jaw mechanism to bear on a general percoid classification and to rescue some main outlines of such a classification from the amorphous condition into which they have deteriorated as a result of the widely varied opinions recently expressed on the subject.

Systematic Position and Relationships of the Percesocine Fishes

THE FISH FAMILIES Sphyraenidae, Mugilidae, and Atherinidae have been assigned to the percesocine fishes by all authors, and many would include only these (e.g., Berg, 1940: 368). Others have expanded the group in various ways (e.g., Boulenger, 1904: 636). Most commonly, however, such expansion has extended only to the family Polynemidae (e.g., Regan, 1912: 846) or, in recent years, to the polyn...

Molecular phylogenetics of pricklebacks and other percoid fishes from the Sea of Japan

Mitochondrial DNA of the Co-1 gene region was sequenced for 8 fish species (in total 17 sequences of at least 532 bp) from the far east of Russia and compared to 3 other perciform sequences, altogether comprising 20 perch-like fish sequences and 2 outgroup sequences (Cypriniformes). The analysis of the protein-coding Co-1 gene revealed a statistically substantiated bias in the (T+C):(A+G) conte...

BACKGROUND: Members of the genus Gyrodactylus species are one of the extensive groups of monogenean ectoparasites which parasitize marine, brackish and freshwater fishes. OBJECTIVES: The main objective of the present study is the identification and diagnosis of the Gyrodactylus specsies on the fishes in certain rivers in the southwest of the Caspian Sea basin. METHODS: The field investigations ...

A phylogeny of the fish family Sparidae (porgies) inferred from mitochondrial sequence data.

The porgies (Sparidae) comprise a diverse group of neritic fishes with a broad geographic distribution. We used mitochondrial DNA sequences from partial 16S ribosomal RNA and cytochrome b genes to reconstruct the phylogenetic history of these fishes. Sequences from 38 sparid species, 10 species in outgroups closely related to sparids, seven basal percoid species, and a non-perciform outgroup sp...
